Red Spot is the 15 year old in the Spot range, named for the Mitchell & Son wine and spirits merchants of Dublin, who marked casks with coloured paint to show how long they should rest. Red meant fifteen years. It returned in 2018 after about five decades away. This is a single pot still whiskey, triple distilled at Midleton from malted and unmalted barley, bottled at 46% in a 75cl bottle and non-chill-filtered.
It matures for at least fifteen years in American bourbon casks, Spanish Oloroso sherry butts and Sicilian Marsala wine casks.
The nose is pot still spice over cooked fruit, baked apple, mango and black cherry, with hazelnut and new leather. The palate opens with ripe fruit sweetness from the Marsala casks, and the finish is long.
