Smokehead is a heavily peated Islay single malt, bottled at 43% in a 35cl bottle by Ian Macleod Distillers. The brand was introduced in 2006 and is recognised by its black bottle with a golden skull.
The whisky matures in Bourbon barrels. It is not chill-filtered, and colouring is added.
The nose combines strong wood and earthy peat smoke with intense spice, sharp cinnamon and ginger, sweet plum jam and fresh lemon peel. On the palate the smoke is hot and distinctly peppery, with honey sweetness arriving late. The finish brings star anise and lemongrass, with a touch of mandarin.
