Talisker 8 Year Old is a cask strength single malt from the 2021 Diageo Special Releases, a collection called Legends Untold. The packaging carries illustrations by the digital artist Ken Taylor and an augmented reality experience that is opened with a QR code.
The nose is gentle at first, with sweet maritime notes and oat porridge giving way to brine, seaweed, rock salt and iodine over a base of peat smoke. The palate is soft and oily, almost perfumed to begin, then salty and lightly sweet, peaty and peppery. The finish is long and warming, ending in smoke and lingering malt. Water increases the maritime character.
