A cask strength Speyside single malt from The Macallan, 14 years old and bottled by the SMWS as Distillery 24, a Rare Release at 63% ABV. It matured in a first-fill hogshead and a refill butt, using Spanish and American oak, and 2,554 bottles were filled.
Sherry, spiced wine and charcuterie lead the nose, with crème brûlée, chocolate raisins, peppercorns and musk. On the palate, dark cherries in chocolate, peaches in syrup and brown sugar meet heavy oak, burnt heather, espresso, cinnamon, ginger and chilli. With water, the nose adds cocoa powder and nuts, and sweetness and tannin come into better balance.
