Ardbeg Anamorphic is a Committee release from the Islay distillery, created by Dr Bill Lumsden as his latest experiment. It was bottled on 17 May 2023 at 48.2% in a limited edition.
The heads of classic ex-bourbon casks were taken out and cut deeply to give a much larger area of wood, and the casks were then charred to the High Mocha level.
The nose is earthy, dusty and slightly biscuity, with sooty tar balanced by silky vanilla. With water it turns floral, with smoked vetiver, aniseed, fennel, chrysanthemum and jasmine. The palate is peppery and warming, with chilli chocolate, bittersweet mocha and black pepper, and the finish is long and strong.
