The Balvenie 16 Year Old French Oak is a Speyside single malt from the Dufftown distillery, in a 750ml bottle at 47.6% ABV.
It matures first in American oak casks, then spends nine months in French oak barrels that previously held Pineau des Charentes Rouge, a fortified wine made in a way similar to cognac. It is the first Balvenie in the range to be finished in French oak.
The nose is typically described as ripe pear and apple, honeycomb and vanilla, with grapefruit zest and peppery spice. The palate is smooth and honeyed, with ginger, shortbread, key lime and a vinous sweetness. The finish is long, with marzipan, vanilla icing and dark chocolate, then crystallised ginger and honey.
